![]() How did Insomniac get started? Great question! Founded in 1994, Insomniac Games is an independent game developer with studios in Burbank, Calif. and Durham, NC. Prior to founding Insomniac, CEO/President Ted Price spent a few years as controller of a start-up medical company, where he decided that life in games must be easier. (He was wrong…) Fortunately, he found two very talented programmers, Alex and Brian Hastings, and together they laid the foundation for Insomniac’s first success,Disruptor. So…what has Insomniac done that I may have heard of? Well, in 16 years, we’ve sold more than 35 million console videogames worldwide. (Not too shabby, right?) All of our titles have been developed exclusively for PS one, the PlayStation 2, and the PlayStation 3 -- where we’ve developed more games and sold more copies collectively than any competitor so far. Insomniac has produced three of PlayStation’s most recognizable franchises: Resistance, Ratchet & Clank and the first three Spyro the Dragon games. Hopefully you’ve heard of them! OK, I get it. So how do you do it? As of 2010, Insomniac Games has grown to 195 hard-working, creative souls and remains completely independent despite a close working relationship with our publisher, Sony Computer Entertainment. As an independent studio, we create and develop the kind of games that we’d like to play, instead of some boring license or port forced on us by corporate overlords. It also means we follow our own production plan that allows us to stagger development so that we have smaller teams, time to visualize a game in pre-production and longer timelines to add final polish.
